Udo Lindenberg
Udo Lindenberg was born May 17, 1946 in the Westphalia town of Gronau, not far from the Dutch border. When he was 13 he won the first prize at "Nordwestdeutshcen Jazz-Jamboree". At 17 he left Germany and went to North Africa and France and played the drums in clubs. Back in Germany in the city of Hamburg he played with several bands. In 1962 he began playing jazz in Düsseldorf. In 1968 he came to a crossroads where he was either going to be a sailor or a musician. He joined the folk band, City Preachers, as a drummer and the next year he started his first own band, Free Orbit.
He was one of the main forces helping to make German rock music popular in the face of a massive invasion of the English language rock in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1971 he began his solo career, always performing with his “Panikorchester”. In 1971 he released his first solo album in English “Lindenberg”. They had their first real success with the 1973 album “Alles klar auf der Andrea Doria”. He was the first West German rock star to appear in a live concert in East Germany before the wall fell, the concert was performed in 1983. Through his music he advocated the bringing of the East and West.
Highlights of his career are participating on a cooperative CD for Africa, being interviewed with ex-German chancellor Willy Brandt, playing at Live Aid concerts, and exchanging gifts and political views with Erich Honecker. He continues to do concert tours and make media appearances. He published an autobiography in 1989. He published a photo album containing some of his art "Lindianer-Bilder in Panikcolor" in 1996.
