Xavier Naidoo
Born in Mannheim, Germany, Xavier Naidoo's soulful voice has been heard alongside the music and voices of such artists as the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, Deborah Cox, 3P's Sabrina Setlur, and the French artist, “Stress.” Naidoo's style ranges from rhythm and blues to pop and rock, and he is commonly associated with the Söhne Mannheims, a musical group of 16 men, and his most famous songs include "Ich Kenne Nichts", "20,000 Meilen", "Souls on Fire" and "Sie Sieht Mich Nicht." Reviewers look to Naidoo's roots for the origin and style of his talent for his Indian and African heritage do influence his, still, distinctly German sound and looks at Herbert Groenemeyer as a role model.
Although he started singing when he was three years old, Naidoo originally thought that he might like to be a cook, and studied cooking briefly before turning to his musical career, which took off in 1992, when he won a recording contract in the United States. Naidoo was dissatisfied with the experience because, in the end, he didn't feel that his American producers really considered any of his ideas and that the result was an album with a sound that was his, but wasn't. When Naidoo returned to Germany, he sang backups for several popular German performers, who recognized his creative potential and helped him launch his solo career. In 1997, he produced a single “Friesen” with Sabrina Setlur, which helped him get his name better known. When he produced his debut solo album “Nicht von Dieser Welt” a year later, the German public was ready and Naidoo held a place in the Top 20 for over a year, eventually going platinum.
The melody and rhythm of Naidoo's music showcase his deeply expressive baritone voice. In recent years, Naidoo has been involved in the typical celebrity scandals and drew a lot of attention to himself in the German courts when he was charged for using and possessing marijuana, for which he was subject to a 20 month conditional period (something like probation) and a large fine. However, he has also been working as an activist and advocate for social justice with the “Brothers keepers” project and in the fight against neo-Nazism.
His second and third albums received no less praise than his first, the most recent of which is showcased on his official website.
